Phoenix Files Book 5…at last

Ok, so my highlight for May has got to be the Phoenix Files Book 5: Fallout.  It has been 12 months since the release of Underground, and finally we can see what is going to happen to our friends in Phoenix.  Be warned, this isn’t the last book, there will be one more called Doomsday (there is no date for this title yet).

The other big surprise for me was the new Dragonkeeper book, Blood Brothers. Unlike the year-long wait for the Phoenix Files title, I had no idea that this one was coming.  It is the fourth book in the series, and the three earlier titles have all been re-issued with new covers (see below)

Other highlights for me are:

Tales of the Blue Jade Book 2: Mapmaker’s Apprentice, The by Peter Cooper
Raven Lucas Book 2: Dead Wrong by Christine Harris
A new pigeon book by Mo Willems: Duckling Gets a Cookie!?The
New Jumper, The
 by Oliver Jeffers
Animal Rescue Book 3: Tiger Tangle by Jackie French

3 Days To Go

That’s right folks, in just three days the CBCA shortlist for 2012 will be announced.

It may not be the race that stops the nation, but on Tuesday April 3rd at midday (Central Standard Time), it is the announcement that stops this office…for about 1 minute…and then it’s all systems go getting the list together and up on the website for all of our keen customers.

This year we have the blog, so the list (with links to the website) will be up shortly after the announcement, this will make early ordering even easier.

On another note, at the beginning of the term I wrote a post about all of the important things that 2012 had in store and I forgot one very important date.  Last week on Thursday March 22nd,  James celebrated 30 years working in the children’s book industry.

On March 22nd 1982 James Williams started work at Children’s Book Shelf in Kent Town with his Aunt Pegi.  Five years later the pair opened Pegi Williams Book Shop and after a number of location changes and  staff changes, a few marathons, a football career, a wedding,  local council elections and the birth of two beautiful boys, James finds himself where he is today…the proud owner of Pegi Williams Bookshop.

Happy Anniversary James!

Countdown to the CBCA Shortlist

Imagine my surprise (and horror) when I looked at the calendar today and realised that in three weeks time the CBCA shortlist will be announced.  Of course this shouldn’t be a surprise, the date has been in the calendar since last year, but all of a sudden it’s week 7 and we are nearly there.

I must say that I still get excited every year when the shortlist is announced, so even though it is one of the busiest (and craziest) days of the year for us, I am looking forward to jumping online at 12pm on Tuesday April 3rd to see which books the judges have deemed worthy.

Be sure to keep an eye on our website www.pegiwilliams.com.au and to visit the blog on Tuesday April 3rd, as we will have all of the books listed, ready for you to get your orders in.

If you want to get some pre-shortlist action visit www.cbca.org.au to see if your state is holding any ‘Claytons’ nights, where guest speakers are asked to predict what they think might be on the Shortlist.

At last…photos of Tobias

Thanks to everyone for their kind messages on the birth of our second son, Tobias James, born on 3rd February 2012 weighing 7lb 5oz (3.3kg) and 51cm.

Everyone is doing fine and ‘Tobes’ or ‘Toby’ is eating often, growing quickly and doing what babies do!

Jonah loves his little brother almost as much as he loves his new big bed, Tobes is a month old now and we’re settling in to some sort of routine (chaos really)

Enjoy the photos, our house is starting to resemble Pegi’s (my late aunt) with all the children’s books that seem to be making their way home.

Australian Curriculum

With every state well on their way to teaching at least one subject under the new Australian Curriculum, we have started to make our own suggestions for titles you might like to use in different curriculum areas.

On our homepage at www.pegiwilliams.com.au we have a link to suggested titles for the Australian Curriculum.  When you click on the map of Australia icon (located at the top centre of the homepage), you will be taken to a page displaying English, History, Maths and Science, with each year level and strand listed underneath.  When you click on the area you are interested in, you will be taken to a list of books that we feel support that area of the curriculum.  Click on the map below to go straight to the Australian Curriculum page:

The number of books listed will vary in each link, but this is an ongoing concern, and new books will be added on a regular basis.  If you are a subscriber to the blog, you will be notified when new titles are added.  If you have not signed up as a subscriber yet, now is a good time to do so, simply add your email address in the Subscribe field in the top right hand corner.

These suggestions are not meant to become a definitive list, they are simply titles we feel support particular areas of the curriculum.  We recommend that you look at the lists in conjunction with the curriculum documents, so you can better see where they may be used.  Click on the link below for the Australian Curriculum website:

Back into the swing of things…

We here at Pegi Williams have been back at work for one week, and I think most of our readers will be heading back to school/work also.  The holidays already seem like a distant memory.
So what does 2012 have in store for us?  Lets see, 2012 is…

The National Year of Reading
Australian Year of the Farmer
United Nations International Year of Co-operatives
Chinese Year of the Dragon
International Year of Sustainable Energy For All
Summer Olympics in London
100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic
CBCA National Conference being held in Adelaide
A Leap Year
and
on December 21st the world will be ending…according to the Mayans.

So, all in all a busy year, but at least we have until December 21st to fit everything in.

For us at Pegi Williams we will start 2012 by launching our Australian Curriculum link on the homepage www.pegiwilliams.com.au, that will make its debut next week. so make sure you keep an eye out for that.
AND
James and wife Chris are expecting Baby Williams number 2, due any time now, so again watch this space for news and photos of the new arrival!
